SPECIAL FEATURES:

THE FORMER BOATHOUSe

The house, endowed with its own typical Venetian altana on the fourth floor was renovated in the 1960s and fitted with a small lift. It is located just across from a supermarket (open daily 9 am to 9 pm) and one of the last art cinemas in Venice.

SESTIERE CANNAREGIO

The apartment lies in the middle of the relatively quieter and less touristic, eastern part of Cannaregio, with its 33 islands and countless canals, in the immediate vicinity of San Marco, San Polo (through the Rialto Bridge) and Castello.

Campo Santi Apostoli

The building lies close to Campo Santi Apostoli, which holds the busy crossing between San Marco – through Rialto – and Strada Nuova, all the way to the train station and Piazzale Roma. The bustling square hosts ice cream shops of every kind and price range. Around the corner you can find the vegetarian-vegan restaurant Fiumefreddo Bio. Those who prefer mixing with the locals might wander in the local hardware store (Ferramenta Battistin), which holds a solution for every problem. At the feet of the church there is also a second-hand shop.

SURROUNDINGS

The surrounding area holds many places worth seeing, such as the Ca’ d’Oro Palace, the Ca’ da Mosto of the famous omonimous navigator’s fame, the old and new Ghettos and their Museo Ebraico (Jewish Museum), the Mastelli Palace (with its camel figures on the façade). Campo dei Mori was Tintoretto’s birthplace, while Marco Polo himself lived in Corta seconda del Milion.

RIO TERA’ BARBA FRUTARIOL

A small grocer (Frutariol, in Venetian, hence the street’s name), bars for an aperitif such as the local Spritz at Bar Puppa (Calle dello Spezier, Cannaregio 4800), pizzerias and a fine food store specialised in wines, pasta, salami and cheese, are all found right through the door. There is also a toy store, a second-hand clothes boutique and a laundromat.

RESTAURANTS IN THE VICINITY

The Vecia Cavana restaurant, in the same building on the ground floor: frequented by the locals for its fresh fish dishes, dinner there is particularly recommended.

Vini da Gigio is also a not-so-secret-anymore tip on every tourist guide. It serves great food in a relaxed and easy atmosphere despite its Michelin-star-reputation. +39 041 5285140 (6 minutes by foot through Strada Nuova).
